Our Pastor's Welcome

It’s so easy, in light of the cost of being involved with other people, to go it alone, to live as self-contained people. There is a Broadway play entitled, “Funny Girl.” I saw the movie when I was in High School and it impacted me greatly. The story was about a singer who was bright, witty, and glamorous. She stood head and shoulders above her peers. Her talent was bottomless. There was just one problem; she was very proud and because of her pride she tried to go it alone. No one was worthy of her. As a result her personal life was filled with emptiness and loneliness. It was like that until she got outside of herself and embraced other people. I love the climax of this play-movie. At the end our hero sings that wonderful song, “People.” You remember the lyrics: “people, people who need people are the luckiest people in the world!”

That song underscores a biblical truth: namely, that we need each other. Life is too big for the individual. The abundant life was meant to be shared in community. We have all seen those one-man bands. A person straps on a drum, puts cymbals to his feet, a horn to his lips, and marches along. He looks ridiculous. His music is awful. We laugh at him as if he were a clown. Yet a symphony is so different. Instead of one person trying to do it all, a group of talented musicians come together, each with an instrument, and the sound is beautiful and harmonious.

Faith Presbyterian Church is a symphony of God’s people who celebrate the love and goodness of God.
